EMPTYSCAPES project – Towards a Counter narrative of ‘EMPTY’ Mediterranean Landscapes?

Abstract – The Emptyscapes project is an interdisciplinary program designed to stimulate changes in the way in which archaeologists in Italy study the archaeology of landscapes, leaving a site-based approach in favour of a truly ‘landscape’ perspective. The aim is to promote the wider application of new paradigms for landscape analysis, integrating ‘traditional’ approaches with multidisciplinary studies and the relatively new techniques of large-scale geophysical survey, airborne laser scanning and geo-environmental studies. Initial results have borne out the potential effectiveness of this approach in central Italy, showing clearly that detection of the ‘archaeological continuum’ is a realistic aim even in the specific environmental and archaeological conditions of the Mediterranean world.
